All students on the roll of SchoolsCompany Central Devon Academy have additional needs that are affecting their ability to access learning in a mainstream setting. Their needs can range from medical, social, emotional needs to specific learning difficulties. Our referral, induction and assessment process is designed to ensure that each young person’s needs are accurately identified and that personalised programmes are in place that will enable them to make rapid progress. Some of our students have a statement of Special Educational Needs or an Education, Health and Care Plan, but irrespective of whether this is the case all students have a personalised learning plan.
Following assessment some students will participate in one or more of our intervention programmes that are specifically designed to support students with their literacy, anger issues, and confidence.
We work closely with parents, carers and professionals to ensure that young people have their additional needs addressed. If it is apparent that a young person’s needs cannot be met without a high level of support in a mainstream setting or that specialist provision may be more appropriate, we will consult with the Educational Psychology Service, parents and carers and professionals to determine whether a request for statutory assessment should be made to the Devon County Council 0-25 Special Education and Disabilities Team.
