Central Devon Academy is an Alternative Provision Academy Sponsored by The SchoolsCompany Trust providing full time education for children from 4-16 years of age. We cover Central Devon including Exeter, East Devon and Mid Devon and work closely with Devon County Council to ensure a swift transition both into and out of the Academy to minimise the impact of any transition on the learning of those young people.
We will give all students access to a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum which can be personalised to meet the needs of individual learners. We will support learners to achieve the best they can and to become valued members of their communities.
Each student will have access to a core entitlement of English, Maths, ICT, Science and Personal and Social Development. We aim to enrich each student’s curriculum by including, Humanities, creative activities such as Art and Drama and more practical subjects such as Food, Sport, Mechanics, Construction, Outdoor Education and landbased studies learning outside the classroom wherever possible.
We recognise that it is essential to build positive relationships and create a safe, nurturing and non-confrontational environment in order to enable students to engage with learning and make progress. We aim to enable all students to raise their levels of attainment. Through regular assessment, reviewing and reporting each student will have clear learning goals to enable them to make substantial and sustained progress.
At Key Stage 4 students will have access to the reformed 14-19 Curriculum and have identified routes to achieve accreditation at Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2 as appropriate. They will be given the opportunity to participate in work experience and vocational learning where possible and be prepared for a future in college, training or the work place.
At Key Stage 3 students will follow personalised programmes in English and Maths based on information gained from baseline assessment. They will also access a core entitlement of Science, ICT, PSHE, Sport, Art, Food and Outdoor Education. These subjects, together with Humanities, will be incorporated into a cross-curricular scheme of work. There will be a focus on teaching the skills for ‘School Survival’ to enable successful reintegration into a mainstream setting.
Key Stage 1 and 2 students will work within the Primary Framework with a focus on developing Literacy and Numeracy skills.
Throughout our service the curriculum will be delivered using a range of teaching styles and methods according to the learning styles of the students. We will endeavour to provide the best quality teaching underpinned by rigorous planning, thorough assessment and reporting, targeted marking, effective use of data and a clearly structured behaviour management system. (refer to separate policies). All staff will be given the opportunity for adequate and appropriate training and support.
It must be acknowledged that many of our young people will have experienced a fragmented education; their ability to engage in learning may be significantly held back by past and/or current social and emotional influences. Through our pastoral programme we will attempt to identify barriers to learning and seek to support each young person in developing self-management and coping skills. It is every young person’s right to be able to access an appropriate educational programme which will help them fulfil their potential and progress to further education and training.
Each young person will be allocated a member of staff who will act as personal mentor for the duration of their time with the service. Personal mentors will be responsible for ensuring that the needs of the young people in their care are properly assessed, clear targets are set, progress is monitored and appropriate advice and guidance is put in place. They will act as the main point of contact for parents and carers and liaise with other agencies when appropriate. Personal Mentors will meet regularly with each of their young people and will work with them and their parents/carers to review programmes if progress is not being made and make recommendations.
